Food lovers can visit this magical island and savour the raw flavour of age old culture, and taste some delicious cuisine. Fish, meat, rice and dates are the traditional food in Bahrain. Machboos is a famous Bahraini dish made of meat or fish served with rice. Another such popular food is muhammar, which is sweet rice served with dates or sugar.
Bahrainis also enjoy typical Arabic food like falafel (deep-fried balls of fround chickpeas served in pita bread), and shawarma, chicken or lamb wrapped in flat bread. Other traditional snacks include small fried potato cakes, sambousas, cheese, sugar, crispy pastry cases filled with meat, all of which can also be purchased in souks.
Fresh fish is an important part of Bahraini diet, and most of the time rice is eaten with fish. Halwa Showaiter or Halwa Bahraini is a popular desert item here, which is a jelly made with saffron, corn starch and various nuts. Coffee is considered a part of traditional welcome in Bahrain.
