Hoteliers concerned about huge lay-offs involving the new rule
Hotels in Bahrain have warned that the new tourism clampdown by the Bahrain Government would result in massive job redundancies.
While the one and two star hotels have been banned from serving alcohol, there is also a ban on recruiting musicians from abroad and ordering them to halt all live entertainment.
About 39 hotels have been notified about the new rules, a day before they were implemented. However, few hoteliers claim that business would be hit hard, as several of their staff have been laid-off now. Moreover, the decision has been implemented a week before the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which implies that they would lose lucrative business generated by the race.
The news on ban of alcohol and entertainment was issued by the Culture and Information Ministry’s Tourism Affairs Department to one and two star hotels on Thursday. The circular gave hotels just a day’s notice about the rule change.
There was a similar order issued in 2007 banning hotels and restaurants in residential areas or near mosques or schools from selling alcohol and operating nightclubs.
