Marginal increase in unemployment rate in Bahrain

The unemployment rate in Bahrain saw only a marginal increase in April, and therefore Bahrain has been able to withstand global meltdown.

While women represented 83 percent, men represented 17 percent. The number of jobseekers obtaining unemployment aid under the National Insurance Scheme topped 2,058, an increase of 243 over March.

This includes 745 new recipients, apart from 53 Bahrainis, who have been laid off. The updated list features 1470 women and 588 men, including 980 university graduates and 1078 others with no university degrees.

Ever-since the launch in December 2007 a total of 8996 jobseekers have been recruited. Women represent the lion’s share topping 4,683 compared to 4313 men. According to the updated figures, the number of unemployed topped 5346 last month.

The April report also took into consideration 7,289 job vacancies with 1357 training opportunities.
