Bahrain reports marked increase in foreign workforce
The number of foreign workers in Bahrain has shot up by 18 percent during the first quarter of this year, compared to same time last year.
The figure soared by 71,000 compared to the same quarter last year, revealed the LMRA (Labour Market Regulatory Authority).
The total number of employees in Bahrain during end of March hit 596,224, marking an annual growth of 16.5 percent, said LMRA Policy Directorate Vice-President, Mohammed Dito and Policy Development Manager, Nedhal Al Banna.
The total number of Bahrainis totalled to 142,642, while the non-Bahrainis totals to 453,582. The annual increase in Bahraini employment was 9.8 percent, the highest growth rate, ever-since LMRA began monitoring Bahraini employment last year, the officials said.
This marks a 7.9 percent increase over the same period last year. Contrary to few reports which many people propagate that people are leaving Bahrain due to recession, the numbers of foreigners taking up new jobs in Bahrain have, in fact, shown stead-fast increase, the official said.
The number of work visas renewed during the first quarter was 26,449 marking a 11.3 percent increase, compared to same time last year.
The number of jobseekers gaining benefitis under the Labour Ministry’s unemployment insurance scheme touched 1815 during the first quarter of this year, while the total number of unemployed reached 5,034. The total number of job vacancies registered at the ministry was 6413 marking a 27 percent increase compared to previous quarter.
