40,000 illegal expatriate workers in Bahrain
Bahrain has a total of 40,000 illegal expatriate workers, who are yet to leave the country, following the expiry of their work permits, new statistics revealed.
A part of the data report by the Financial Audit Court was published in local daily last week, wherein the figures indicate that there has been a successful reduction in the number of run-away cases from 30,000 to 4000, after the announcement of amnesty scheme in 2007.
The report reveals that the cost of renewing work permits to legalize their stay, may even amount up to BD7million. The report states that LMRA is responsible for not pursuing the cases of such workers.
Although 40 inspectors were recruited by LMRA to inspect work sites and check the commitment by companies in not recruiting illegal workers, the inspectors are yet to provide the authority with information on their bank accounts to check out cases of bribery.
