More recruitment likely in MENA region, following downturn
More than half of the employers in the region (52 percent) are likely to recruit during the next couple of months, as the region picks up after the global economic downturn, with 26 percent having confirmed to do so, while the rest 26 percent agreed that they would probably hire, according to the latest Jobs Index study by Bayt.com, the leading job site in the region, together with YouGov Siraj, the research specialists.
A quarter of the respondents in the UAE agreed that their organizations will surely recruit during the next three months, while another 23 percent agreed that they would probably be hiring. Only 19 percent said that they probably or definitely will not hire during the next quarter.
Around the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, countries reported varying propensity to hire as part of the Jobs Index. About 34 percent respondents in Oman said that they will surely be hiring during the next three months. This was closely followed by Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, with 30 and 31 percent respectively agreeing that their organizations will definitely be recruiting new staff during the following months.
In Qatar 55 percent agreed that they will probably hire during the next quarter, while 55 percent in Kuwait and 47 percent in Bahrain agreed that there will probably be recruitment. The figures however have indicated that the Saudi Arabian market is currently the best and has coped well during the current economic cycle.
The study revealed that Middle East favours employing graduates in the fields of engineering or business management, with 21 percent agreeing that these were the main streams. Law and hospitality were the least important qualifications, as only 5 percent of organizations agreed that these may be important when selecting staff.
The Jobs Index (JI) was held to judge views on job availability and hiring, identifying the job trends and to offer an understanding of the major skill sets and qualifications needed in the MENA job market.
According to Lama Ataya, Marketing Head at Bayt.com, launching the jobs index and conducting a quarterly survey to gauge how the region’s employers feel about recruitment during coming months, and comparing them over time, will give a clear indication about the way in which the region’s employment market is progressing.
This data will be used to enable regional businesses, HR professionals and other relevant industry stakeholders to have an up-to-date series of indicators about job market trends across the Middle East, he added.
The data for October 2009 was collected online during the month with respondents over the age of 18 years of all nationalities participating in the survey from UAE, Qatar, KSA, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia and Pakistan.
