Bahrain strives to boost employment among women
Three out of four women in Bahrain are unemployed, although women constitute 50 percent of nations workforce, it has been revealed.
This implies that out of four percent unemployment rate, three percent is due to women, said Dr. Majeed Al Alawi, the Labour Minister in Bahrain.
To increase the population of working women in the private sector, a national campaign is being conducted, which aims to orient for them. In fact, few jobs have been designated as exclusively female-only.
Dr. Alawi said that an ‘University Graduates Employment Programme’ has been planned, which is likely to begin soon, mainly directed towards females, with 75 percent of the jobs offered for them.
Also, a three-day career fair will be opened next week, which will largely showcase opportunities for women. The event will be held from Monday to Wednesday at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Center, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of Majesty King Hamad and Chairwoman of Supreme Council for Women.
Dr. Al Alawi said that so far 825 women have enrolled in special training programmes. Out of this, 6769 have enrolled at Bahrain Training Institute (BTI) over the past three years, and 2177 have involved in Supreme Council for Vocational Training.
On conducting a study, it was found that employers do not prefer women in certain jobs such as painting or welding, due to dangers or the requirements. Such a misconception should be overcome, and more jobs should be kept open to women, and it should also be ensured that men do not hold women-oriented jobs, and such jobs should be kept open only to women, he said.
