MPs demand suspension of work at Al Nurana development
The MPs have demanded that the work on BD378million development Al Nurana project along northern coastline be put to a halt.
The Al Nurana project, developed by Manara Development Company, began without consent of the Northern Municipal Council, the MPs claim. The move follows an urgent proposal submitted by Al Wefaq bloc, claiming that sea was reclaimed for the project and work was due to commence within days, without a permit being granted.
According to the Chairman, Public Utilities and Environment Affairs the project has not taken into account the government’s master plan, which outlines the image of the country by 2030. The reclaimed land used for the Al Nurana project should not be touched, as the masterplan indicates that it is a sea, and the other part of it is earmarked for a government housing project, which has been approved by the Housing Ministry in 2005.
It was reported last month that developers will have to meet stringent conditions before councillors grant approval for the major development, which includes charity payments of up to BD80,000 to help the nearby communities of Karranah, Janusan, Jid Al Haj, and those residing near Bahrain Fort.
Residents are also demanding a walkway, public coastline, jetty for fishermen, Sports hall for Karranah villagers and houses. The developers were also asked to provide fair compensations to fishermen affected by the mass reclamation taking place.
The residents were also seeking three public parks for residents of Janusan, Karranah and Jid Al Haj which would be paid by the developer. The Councillors have also demanded that 200 houses be built and distributed to the village residents who are currently in the waiting lists of Housing Ministry.
The developer also agreed to build roads to ease possible traffic congestion that the area is likely to have, it is said. The proposal is now being studied by the Cabinet.
