Bahrain International Garden Show to open to public on 22nd Feb

The Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) will be unveiled on 21st February, and will open to the public from 22nd to 25th February at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIECC).

The Show will be held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with continued support from HRH Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Consultative Council for the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD).

Speaking about the show at a press conference, Shaikha Maram Bint Isa Al Khalifa, the Secretary-General of NIAD, mentioned that the show will continue to showcase a wide range of agricultural services and technologies that play a major role in the development and sustainability of agricultural sector in the Kingdom.

This year’s show is expected to focus on good agricultural policies and standards that ensure security and safety of agricultural workers, on par with international standards. In order to achieve this, the theme ‘Food Safety and Human Health’ has been chosen for this year’s edition, wherein a complete display of pre and post-harvest procedures that affect the quality of agricultural products and good agricultural practices would be focused upon for food safety and for sustainability of environment.

The pavilion will also have two areas allocated to official bodies ‘the Food Safety and Quality Control Unit’ and the ‘Food Control and Food Analysis Laboratory’ section that monitor food safety in Bahrain. Further, the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority will also participate in the show to present their efforts in ensuring food safety in the UAE.

During the show, NIAD will organize workshops that focus on the quality and taste of food to ensure human health and safety. The workshops would be held together with four Greek companies that specialize in organic food. The workshops are aimed at introducing participant cooks and food distributors with a variety of organic and natural products to form new partnerships between Bahrain and Greece.

The show is likely to involve more than 155 exhibitors, who would display their products, technologies and innovations in an area spanning 7000 sqm. This year, the show will involve participation of several large agricultural companies from around the world, apart from 14 Bahraini farmers to support the local produce.

The ‘Khlasi Garden’ pavilion will also be at the show this year, to include several activities from recreational games to educational workshops on food safety to raise children’s awareness on healthy and safe food, and to create a healthy future generation.

The President of Bahrain Garden Club, Zahra Abdulmalik, said that the show will also feature annual Flower and Vegetable competitions, categories for flower arrangements, open competition for locally grown flowers and vegetables, and photography competition.

The general public are welcome to the Bahrain International Garden Show, and take advantage of the knowledge, educational experience, economic and commercial initiatives that contribute to the sustainability of the Kingdom’s agricultural sector, Shaikha Maram said.
