Metro Bahrain, the latest solution for increasing traffic woes

Traffic issue has been a major hurdle for the Bahrain Government, despite investing BD1.5bn on roads expansion. This has compelled the government to come up with Metro Bahrain.

According to Kamal Ahmed, the Transportation and Telecommunications Minister, Metro Bahrain will meet the traffic issues to a great extent. The service would be appealing to the youth.

The first phase of the project includes establishment of 29km network including 20 stations that would be operated across two lines. It will have the capacity of 43k passengers per hour.

The first line will link Bahrain International Airport with Seef Mall and will have stations at King Hamad Hospital, Bab Al Bahrain, Avenues Mall and City Centre.
The second line will link Juffair with educational area in Isa Town, through the Al Fateh Street, Diplomatic Area and Bab Al Bahrain.

Meanwhile, the latest data released by the Central Informatics Organisation showed that the number of vehicles in the Kingdom reached 700,000 units last year, a 52 per cent jump in the past ten years.

The private vehicle numbers in Bahrain have touched 510,000 while 24,000 vehicles were registered as rental cars. The government annually issues 60,000 driving licenses, with 400,000 licenses being received in past ten years.

The Ministry has established 296 public transport stations and solar panels would be installed in these bus stops with the help of a British Company.

The Ministry Sources revealed that public buses cover 77 percent of the areas in Bahrain, with about 905,000 people having used the public buses this June.
