Qatar-Bahrain Causeway project to begin early next year
Work on the proposed Qatar-Bahrain Causeway project, hoped to be one of the longest sea crossing in the world, will begin early next year, it has been confirmed.
A group of six contractors, including Vinci from France, is under negotiations with the management of the project for the final design and cost of the project.
This will have to be accepted by the Board of Directors of the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation, before the commencement of the project, said William Nevel, Public Affairs Manager for Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Management, Kellogg, Brown & Root International (KBR), said.
Although Nevel declined to reveal an estimated cost of the project, he said the cost will be shared between the two countries. However, media reports estimate the cost of the two-nation causeway at Dh.9.9billion ($2.7bn).
The 40-kilometer causeway is designed to carry passengers and freight by rail and road between Bahrain and Qatar. The roadway will comprise two traffic lanes, an emergency lane in each direction. The rail track will also offer two sets of tracks for freight and high-speed passenger trains.
