Khalifa bin Salman Port to be officially unveiled on 6th December

The BD134mn Khalifa bin Salman Port will be officially launched in Bahrain on 6th December 2009, it has been announced.

The state-of-the-art facility will be unveiled under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad and Finance Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.

The official launch date was announced during the launch of the fifth annual Trans Middle East Container Ports, Shipping and Transport Logistics Exhibition and Conference event, held at the International Convention Centre at the Gulf Hotel.

Speaking during the event, Charles Menkhost, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals – Africa and Middle East and Indian subcontinent, said the port’s launch was the beginning of a long journey towards economic recovery in the global maritime industry.

The shipping industry is closely linked to the world economy, and the industry has been much affected by the economic crunch. Although several companies are focusing on short-term survival under such circumstances, Bahrain continues to enjoy steady growth rates, Menkhost said.

In the opinion of Menkhost, Gulf economies have continued to post modest gains during recent months, in contrast to several other countries across the globe.

Given the strategic location as a port for shipping lines, seeking investment in the Gulf markets, there has been a unique opportunity for the country to secure itself as an international shipping heavyweight, he said.

The port covers an area of 110 hectares of reclaimed land along the north-east of Bahrain. Located 13kms away from Bahrain International Airport, it offers shipping and logistic services and sea freight in accordance to the highest standards in the industry.
