Northern Town homes to begin by year-end

Bahrain Housing Minister Shaikh Ibrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa has agreed that work on the BD1bn first homes in the Northern Town in Bahrain will begin by the end of this year. The first phase would involve construction of 1500 homes, to be completed by 2012. About 15,000 Northern Governorate residents in the housing waiting list of the Ministry would be given homes in the town in ten years time, revealed Al Khalifa.

Meanwhile, investigations continue to focus on delays by the Ministry to begin work in the town, even though the foundation stone was laid in 2002 by the Economic Development Board Chairman, H.R.H. Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

There have been rumours that the reclaimed land for the town has been sold to other private investors to shrink governmental projects.

However, Al Dossary said that ten out of fourteen islands in the town have been completely reclaimed, although the reclaimed islands constitute only a quarter of the area of the town.

He revealed that the initial 1500 houses, spreading across 400sqm of area will be built on islands number 13 and 14 and will be ready by 2012.

Concerns continue about the infrastructure in the town and when the roads, bridges, electricity and water supplied would be provided, he pointed out.

Al Dossary revealed that the committee is awaiting the exact plans for the town. The announcement made in 2002 was that the town could accommodate a population of 75,000 to 1,00,000.

The town, which is atleast five times the size of Seef District, will include several facilities, including hospital, aquarium, interactive museum, health centers, university, mosques, schools, hotels, malls, libraries, petrol stations and post offices.

Apart from these, there will be the Civic Plaza, housing offices of the Northern Municipality Governorate and Municipal Council. Among the other plans are state-of-the-art transportation amenities and three lagoons such as ferries and train network.

There will also be nine youth centers, a huge stadium, a modern sports club, Centers for disabled, elderly, and women’s societies. Among the other amenities planned within the town are 20 kindergartens, 12 primary schools, 6 intermediate schools, 5 secondary schools, 4 libraries, and a large community hall.
