Bahrain tourism demand yet to rebound

Bahrain is yet to regain its tourism demand, since the start of Arab Spring, says the latest data compiled by STR Global.

The leading provider of market data to hotel industry, also mentioned that Manama had experienced the strongest decline in demand across the GCC region. Therefore, the occupancy rates and average daily rates have fallen by 37.6 and 12.9 percent respectively, over the span of a year, reporting 41.6percent occupancy and BD77.44 average daily rate.

The rating agency S&P, last month, had reported that Bahrainís real economy may not be affected much by the unrest. The report said that business activity had been largely unaffected, except for comparatively small tourism sector.

Kuwait, with limited fresh supply, saw a strong occupancy growth of nearly 10.7percent in 2011, STR Global said. In Qatar, fresh supplies and matching demand led to flat occupancy levels, with an increase of only up to 0.7percent in average daily rates.

Egypt had witnessed violent protests, with occupancy declining y 29.5percent, while in Levant region, the demand declined in its main cities by 12.2percent in Lebanon and by 6.8percent in Amman and Jordan.

However, the good news in last year's performance is that, the average rate across Egypt, Northern Africa and Levant region, has remained on par with previous year, with declining occupancy levels giving way to improved stability during second half of the year.
