Five-year development ban along Sitra coast lifted
A five-year development ban along the coasts of Sitra in Bahrain, has been lifted, to make way for major infrastructure and housing projects, a top official said.
However, councillors have prohibited construction of any sort, stretching up to 1km into water, along the sea fronts of the island, to preserve its coastline and prevent reclamation.
The ban, which was first introduced in June 2007, was renewed initially for six months, but was soon scrapped by the Central Municipal Council, as it was thought to stall the area's development.
This lifting of ban follows series of requests from Housing and Works Ministries, and the National Oil and Gas Authority, claiming that major services in Sitra have been delayed due to the ban, said Dr. Juma Al Kaábi, the Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Minister.
However, the Council Chairman, Abdulrazzak Al Hattab, who spoke on the issue, mentioned that the lifting of ban does not imply that private development would be permitted along the coast.
Plans are on to introduce family recreational projects on the coast, which will keep it away from any private projects else, the place may be used for any highly awaited government project. This may include government housing projects, and necessary infrastructure, including coastal public amenities, he said.
Dr. Al Kaábi confirmed that, with things being clearer now, the Ministries will carry out the necessary infrastructure works along Sitra's coasts.
