First national theatre in Bahrain progressing on schedule
The first national theatre in Bahrain, a BD19mn waterfront facility, located in proximity to the Diplomatic Area, will be unveiled as scheduled.
The theatre construction is in progress over the past one year, and is due for completion by mid-November. Additional workers, too, have been employed to ensure timely completion of the work.
Spanning 11,669 sq m, the theatre has a capacity to accommodate 1000 people, and aims to attract some of the top performers in the world, and in the Kingdom. The theatre will be so equipped so as to stage drama, opera, modern and classical dances, symphonic concerts and a flexible theatre.
Speaking about the progress of the project, the Works Minister, Essam Khalaf, mentioned that work is in progress round-the-clock, with extra manpower being deployed, to ensure timely completion. Currently 700 people are working on the project.
The Culture Minister, Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, has urged the officials to comply with fixed deadline for opening of the theatre, as it also coincides with events taking place as part of celebrations that mark Manama as the Capital of Arab Culture.
Work has begun on erecting the cladding walls of the auditorium, which will house 1001 seats for the audience. Steel works for the main entrance were done, so that it reflects the scene of water lagoon, parallel to theatre’s entrance. Further talks were also on, about ways to overcome the obstacles in implementing the project, which is likely to become a major cultural landmark.
