Plans underway to turn Bab Al Bahrain Suq into tourist hot spot area
Discussions are underway to turn the Bab Al Bahrain Suq into a tourist-spot only area.
This could be done by removing shops that are not tourist-friendly, says Khalaf Hejair, the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) Chairman, who is also the Board Member and Committee Chairman of Small and Medium Enterprises.
According to Hejair, the shops need to only sell items that are unique to Bahrain, and what Bahrain is known for, as these are things that would interest tourists. Among such things are souvenirs, artefacts, dates, local fruits, clothes, gold and silverware and restaurants serving local cuisine.
Urgent steps also need to be taken to ensure that tourists visit the country on a regular basis else, the businesses cannot be sustained. Hejair plans to put forward a formal proposal to the BCCI Board soon on this issue.
He further said that the Suq can be made more attractive for the local population too, by offering special attractions for them.
The Small and Medium Enterprises in Bahrain had suffered over the past few years, owing to political unrest and the global financial crisis. But, things have now begun to look up, and governmental support is needed to turn the corner, he pointed out.
He lauded the recent governmental decision to suspend the BD10 monthly expatriate worker fee charged by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority until the year-end. He said more such incentives are required until Bahrain gets back on track.
