Labour Ministry mulls scrapping Bahrainisation policy

The Labour Minister in Bahrain, Jameel Humaidan, confirmed early this week, that the country is working towards scrapping the Bahranisation policy. The private sector companies need not ensure that they meet the nationalisation percentage in their companies, once the rule is enforced.

However, the Bahrainisation percentage would be evaluated by the Ministry to avoid imposing difficult regulations on company owners, and enable finding appropriate work opportunities for nationals in private sector.

The Minister emphasized that the policy will be implemented in a flexible manner to improve job opportunities for nationals, as with the present situation, out of every 10 jobs, 8 go to foreign workforce and only 2 are given to nationals. He further said that Bahrainis will be given proper training so as to provide them with better job opportunities.

The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) Board Member and Pearl and Gold Jewellery Committee Chairman, Mohammed Sajid, welcomed the announcement and said that Bahranisation policy had actually prevented several companies from achieving their potential. With such a decision, these companies can get more competitive in the international market.

Businessmen too have welcomed this new decision. The businessmen agreed that they are willing to hire and train nationals at 20percent or even 50 percent as long as they are available in the market, but, the rule should not be forced on a business.

The businesses were suffering from lack of trained Bahrainis in certain sectors, but still, they have to be hired, to keep up the required quota, despite there being no enough work to be delegated to them, pointed out another businessman.

Further, the cost of hiring Bahrainis for sole purpose of meeting the Bahrainisation percentage requirement is quite high, and this decision is hoped to help businesses remain competitive in the international market.
